Peterson Air & Space Museum  : Peterson Afb, CO. And another local favorite, started in 1982 as the NORAD Visitor Center (North American Aerospace Defense command)– a starting point for visitors who boarded buses to take them from Peterson Air Force Base to the Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center. It was contained in one small building—the original airport passenger terminal for the City of Colorado Springs. By 1996, all of Colorado Springs’ original Municipal Airport buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places. That same year, Colorado designated those buildings as a state historic district. Today, the Peterson Museum is located right in the center of that 8.3 acre historic district on Peterson Air Force Base.
